review of ny trash bar show

Concert Review: Punk Rock Princess Leiana! - Japanese Sub-Culture Genki Shock Group (New York, NY) - Meetup.com

Genki Shock is no longer just about Japanese music. Sure, its the base, the foundation, the meat of our empire, but when we see talent we want to support it.

That's what Genki Shock has done for Leiana. Zak booked her for the Halloween Witching Hour out in Queens. He kept in contact. And when Leiana played at the Trash Bar one cold November Monday, we came out to see her play.

When you step into the Trash Bar you don't expect there to be live music. The atmosphere is laid back, with a hotdog turner and popcorn, cushy seats and televisions all over. Then you see it, there in the back, under a dim lamp with a little podium next to it. The Red Velvet Curtain of Promise with a hand written sign that says "Live Music This Way."

If that wasn't cool enough, when you step behind that red curtain you see the stage, dwarfed by speakers that go from floor to ceiling, and a bar with a sign that says "beer free from 8-9." And you watch as act after act go up on that tiny stage surrounded by booming speakers of doom, and for the first time you truly feel hardcore.

And that was just the venue.

Leiana seemed as at home in the hodgepodge room as she seemed on the polished floor at the Witching Hour concert. She seems like the type who feels at home no matter where she plays. Oozing with her usual stage presence, Leiana put on yet another phenomenal show. She sang like she was playing a stadium, giving it her all (despite a nearly crippling sinus infection that caused the cancellation of the two final shows on the tour). Her gritty and spastic new-breed of rock was both a surprise, and almost expected in the punky atmosphere. Leiana is a surprise every time. Her songs are unique from each other and internally, switching beat (but not tempo) often in mid song, providing an uniquely Leiana feel to her music. There are no substitutions for Leiana. She is the rising punk star the music industry needs to put some zest into the stale and flaky industry standard.

Having spent some weeks listening to the album "page" before this show I could get into the songs, could cheer extra loud when she played my faves ("All Over" and "Surfy Punky") and stand in awe of the stuff I hadn't heard yet. I jumped and I clapped and I throughly enjoyed the whole evening.

She is a refreshing flavor of music and I look forward to the next time I'll get to see this Philadelphia native play here in the big apple.

Leiana's personality and presence don't begin and end on stage. When she isn't performing she's talking to the crowd, providing merchandise, and letting us know about her. She talked about the tour, and spoke in length to our fearless leader Zak before and after she went on. I was a little sad to leave as early as I did (about ten minutes after her set), but I was still recovering from my run in with Melt Banana the night before.

Leiana, please come back to New York and play for us again some day, ok

BIG BLOG ONLINE REVIEW OF NO GOING BACK

By Grant Britt

The Deal: Philly Indie rockers redefine skate punk.
The Good: Leiana sounds like a punky version of the Go-Gos: faster, with better guitars and more funk. But this aint no girly pop. Leiana the singer and the band deliver their message about as subtly as a punch in the nose. The songs are little thought snippets, pounded into place with Treeces sledgehammer guitar and nailed down with Leianas punky, adolescent -sounding vocals. Its billed as skatepunk, but its more interesting than the fast-paced industrial sludge/speed-metal fusion that usually defines that genre. This stuff has plenty of punch provided by big power chords played at a headlong gallop. Guitarist Chuck Treece plays guitar Leslie West would be proud of. "Suffer" sounds like Belinda Carlyle fronting Mountain; big fat, crunchy riffs that slide greasily down the fretboard.
"Friend" is an interesting standout, the closest thing youll find to pop, but with a snarly enuff attitude that you wont mistake it for teenage angst. "Me Again" is full tilt head-banging, and "No Going Back" sounds like it just dropped out of Metallicas setlist.
The Verdict: If you missed your morning caffeine fix cause your local stop-and-rob was out of Jolt Cola, this is a fine substitute.

REVIEW OF UPCOMING CD

Review - Rough and tumble grrrls are hot. They know it. Guys really know it. But forget the good-looks, this bitch will crush you. Armed with a vice-grip of a voice (slightly sweetened with harmony), Leiana parks her tush firmly in the seat of the skate-core kids with a nod to Black Flag, old school punk rock, and smart alternative female rock. Move over Joan Jett, there’s a new chick in town.

HOSTING PUPPETS

PUPPETS PUNK OUT
Skate meets Surf meets Singing Socks as Leiana Hosts Puppet Karaoke Show this February

New Wave Punk sensation Leiana will take a break from her hectic touring schedule to host the 2007 Puppet Karaoke Xtreme Punk Makeover Show February 15th at the M-Room in Fishtown, Philadelphia where a cast of crazy hand puppets will dish out mutilated pop song classics karaoke-style in this latest edition of the ongoing, award-winning celebrity-hosted Puppet Karaoke Universe Show.

Surf and Skate collide in the female-fronted Leiana, whose musical niche Origivation Magazine described as "an insightful blend of the best of ambient and serious punk" and "kickass, smart, and sexy". The band has toured the UK and stateside extensively, and has 2 self-produced albums under the Page Records Label with a third on the way. Inspired by '70's British punk and '80s SoCal hardcore, Leiana herself has an irrepressible DIY spirit and success to match, with tracks such as "Surfy Punky" and "Follow Blind" showing up as soundtracks on ESPN and pro-skateboarder Todd Falcon's movie "Call To Fly". Leiana, along with multi-instrumentalist Chuck Treece (a founding member of punk legends McRad and a player with such diverse acts as The Roots, Bad Brains, Urge Overkill, G.Love, and Billy Joel) is taking timeout from her maddening tour schedule (Boston-area LocoBazooka, NXNE, South by Southwest) to hang with hand puppets for one very special night.

The Puppet Karaoke Show is a continuous phenomenon that features wisecracking, irreverent puppets with a penchant for singing Sinatra, Sex Pistols and everything in-between, plus a lot of improv comedy and audience participation thrown into the mix. Anyone can join in the slightly organized chaos by building a puppet onsite and competing for prizes and the chance to be podcast in the show's weekly video series.
The highly interactive show is beginning its own mini-tour by traveling to different venues in the Philadelphia area and beyond.

The PKU show is produced by R.S. Purcell and Alex Strang of comedy troupe Waiting For Cable. The M-Room is located at 15 W Girard Ave. The show is Thursday, Februray 15th at 9:00 PM. There is a $7 cover and advance tickets are available online.

LEIANA NOVEMBER EAST-COAST TOUR, ALBUM TO FOLLOW

Leiana, one of the freshest and most articulate bands of the post-punk era, will be on the move again as their tour reaches the US east coast. The event is not to be missed for any admirer of a great live act who cut through the dross and mediocrity of modern music to the vitality of 70s punk.

The Philadelphia-based band is spearheaded by writer and singer, Leiana, and the multi-instrumental mastermind Chuck Treece. Between them and the seasoned playing of their band, Leiana is the apostle of skate-punk, leading the latest generation who like nothing more than to surf, skate and have their fill of great live music.

From a chance meeting via a mutual friend, Leiana and Treece have cemented an astonishing musical partnership, combining the years of writing of the former with the expert musical training and performance of the latter. Treece was already an established and respected musician and writer, having formed McRad in 1983 and establishing a cross-genre reputation that has seen him work with Dr Dre, Billy Joel, Busta Rhymes and Amy Grant. Leiana had absorbed music since she could pitch a note, ever widening her pool of influences to combine The Ruts, Black Flag and Social Distortion with the dominant women of rock: Chrissie Hynde, Hazel O’Connor and Penelope Houston. From fooling around with piano and drums as a child, through a stint at the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles, singing became her passion.

Leiana and Treece were determined to learn from the punk and hard-rock pioneers of the 70s and 80s – “diving deeper into a particular scene from the past,” as Leiana has described their method – to create a band, sound and outlook that spoke directly to like-minded young people. “I was only looking for someone to help put together an EP [of her early songs],” Leiana has said, “but we clicked really well and he ended up playing on it and producing it, and then we formed a band. They formed Page Records, home to the next McRad album.

Leiana’s first album was released in May 2005, titled “Page”. A wave of critical acclaim and admiration followed its release. “Polished, energetic skate punk that should connect even with those who don’t don helmets or elbow pads,” was how OnlineRock defined the 13-track creation. Origivation Magazine spoke of the variety of soft and raucous tracks, calling it an “insightful blend of the best of ambient and serious punk”. Many indeed have commented on the album’s tasteful interludes of quieter, thoughtful tracks, such as “Miss Ya” and “All Over”. This variety is even more admirable given that the entire album is composed of just Leiana and Treece. The first single, “Surfy Punky” was snapped up by several punk compilations as well as – surprisingly – gracing the soundtrack to the women’s skiing on ESPN. “Follow Blind” was also on demand for compilations, and featured on pro-skateboarder Todd Falcon’s movie ‘Call To Fly’. Leiana’s songs have also gained necessary radio play, from the US to Japan.

Since the release of “Page”, the band had a few line-up changes for its first tour, but is now settled; with Dave Woodman (Peter’s Cathedral, Idle Wilds, Black Beans, and AM60) on bass, and Louie Graff on guitar- from Paul Green’s School of Rock. Taking advantage of this early momentum, the band has been busy working on new material at Bombshelter studios in LA. The new album, “No Going Back,” is scheduled for release in early 2007. There is a levelheaded approach to the project, as commented on by Chuck Treece: “We want to keep our first 3 or 4 records in a nucleus. Bands tend to put out a couple good records then start to drift off worrying about commercial success, but we want to keep it real and organic”.

And so they do. The current tour – which reaches Philadelphia on the 31st October - has had venues packed to the rafters with devotees, purists and simply those curious about the hype. Each time they play they recruit more fans, and their excellent online sight www.leiana.com goes from strength to strength. Given the band’s homage to the punk and new-wave artists of yesteryear, and their astonishing abilities live, a ticket to Leiana is a celebration of the past by witnessing the future.

Put on Philadelphia-based Leiana’s album, Page, and stand back. It’s a blistering 13-track debut of polished, energetic skate punk that should connect even with those who don’t don helmets or elbow pads. Just as long as they like music that packs a punch. In addition to Leiana’s sultry vocals, music veteran Chuck Treece (Bad Brains, Urge Overkill) produced and co-wrote the album, and performs sizzling guitar leads throughout.
While the amps often crank to eleven like the band’s the second coming of Jane’s Addiction, tunes like “All Over” and “Miss Ya” provide some breathing room. The album sounds great thanks to a quality production, and Leiana’s hypnotic vocals and Treece’s riveting guitar make an indelible imprint by album’s end.
